Corruption…Kenya’s Most Thriving Industry

Unless you’ve been living under a rock – which I have been and despite that I still got to find out about it- people from the public sector have been hit with one corruption scandal after another this past few weeks, the most famous of which is the 9 Billion KES National Youth Service (NYS) scandal.

As more news emerges about the details of the scandals, Kenyans wonder why they even bother paying taxes when it enriches only a specific few.

As I mentioned in Things Fall Apart, my interest in this lies in the waste of human potential as a result of corruption.

The butterfly effect of corruption can be seen in this picture…

And sometimes I feel these corrupt people are just insulting people’s intelligence. Take a look at some of the breakdown of the money from the NYS scandal. But then again, maybe their stupidity is a blessing because otherwise they wouldn’t have been caught.

We look at statistics like the ones presented above and we can’t imagine what it means for 9 Billion to just disappear into someone’s stomach.

To help provide context, 9 Billion KES is the cost of 18 PET scanning machines – a medical scanner that the whole of Kenya has only ONE of (which was supposed to be installed in Aga Khan Hospital in March 2018 and I’m not even sure it’s already there).”

Think about that for a second.
